November 8 Pub Night at Runcible Spoon!

The June 2019 Pub Night
The Pipers' Society is back for its monthly pub night on November 8!

At 6PM we'll be taking over the Runcible Spoon for a bit of piping. Bring friends and family to enjoy the evening with us, and an appetite for the food and drink the Spoon provides! If you're a piper, we have a basic list of tunes you can prepare so you can play along - email us at for that list. We welcome musicians of all stripes to come by and see what we can do to play together. The pipers are always up for a bit of a challenge!

If the weather proves too chilly to be outside on the patio, we'll be in the Spoon's front room on smallpipes and quieter instruments.

Bring your friends to enjoy some good music!

October 4 Pub Night Recap

BPS October 2019 Musicians. Photo by Shelby Fletcher
On October 4 the Pipers' Society hosted what is likely to be its last outdoor pub night of 2019, as winter weather is sure to start rolling in by November. The weather for this meet was perfect, starting in the low 70s and dropping into the 60s as the evening wore on.

The Pub Night featured 12 musicians - 7 bagpipes, 2 tenor drummers, and 3 chanter learners - one of our largest turnouts of pipers to date. The group also featured gender parity - 6 of he musicians present were women. In all, one piper joined a large ensemble for the first time today, two joined their first Pipers' Society meeting, and one made their performance debut of any type on the chanter today.

Performances ranged from piping duets to full ensembles, as well as smallpipe performances, Galician gaita, practice chanter, and border shepherd pipes, most accompanied by tenor drum.

With the end of the year coming, chances are good that this was our last outdoor pub night. We'll be back next month regardless on November 8 - if the nights are too cold, we'll be on our quieter smallpipes! We hope to see you then.

Pub Nights Announced through April

The Bloomington Pipers' Society has scheduled with the Runcible Spoon its monthly bagpipe pub nights through April! All of our pub nights run from 6PM to 8PM, at the Runcible Spoon at 412 East 6th Street in Bloomington, Indiana. The Spoon is pretty intimate as a space, so when the weather is poor we'll be indoors on session instruments and quieter bagpipes.

Fourth Street Arts Festival 2019

A group of performers with the Bloomington Pipers' Society put on a show at the Fourth Street Arts Festival on August 31, 2019. The Fountain Trust Pipe Band Drum Major Doug Weisheit joined pipers from three different bands - the Fountain Trust Pipe Band, the Southern Indiana Pipes & Drums, and the Greater Midwest Pipe Band - in giving a 30-minute demonstration of Scottish pipe band music, and showcasing different types of bagpipes.

Piper Clancy Clements gave a performance on the the gaita galega and provided a bit of information about the history of the bagpipe as a class of musical instrument. Angus Burke performed several dance tunes on the Scottish smallpipes, explaining the difference between the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipes and the smallpipes. The full group of five pipers gave performances of classic bagpipe band tunes and aires.

The Bloomington Pipers' Society aims to provide these sorts of educational performances in addition to its monthly bagpipe social nights at the Runcible Spoon, and we are pleased with the program we gave.
